CASE STUDY 1 OF 3

CLIENT: Harvard | PHACS (Pediatric HIV/AIDS Cohort Study)

deliverables: WIREFRAMES, VISUAL DESIGNS, COMPLETED WEBSITE

  • Increasing study awareness and participant engagement for the study mission to increase participant retention and empower participants

  • Create community engagement materials, especially interactive ones (short videos, one-page infographics, etc.)

  • Increase PHACS awareness outside of academic circles for retention, longevity, long term funding, and HIV/AIDS education in general

THE BRIEF

THE CHALLENGES

  • Due to privacy and concerns about unintentional HIV/AIDS status disclosure, we could not use social media as a means to engage

  • The project needed to be completed in one year and be managed internally as materials expand and study updates

THE SOLUTIOn

  • A website built on a template platform allowed us to have programming and design control, house multimedia projects with adequate storage space, utilize features without programmers for a valuable user experience

  • All pages/materials were community-centered (links to the original website for research focused questions)

  • A section with a dedicated timeline addressing HIV/AIDS research in the United States, and showed the impact and role PHACS

EXECUTION + DESIGN

  • I consulted directly with community around branding and design and ourprojectpositive.com was initiated

  • I helped to create a friendly, engaging images/designs that were reflective of the established PHACS brand leveraging a new color palette (to branch away from the PHACS study colors)

  • Engagement has surpassed the original site

  • Website connected us with other international researchers (Oxford/NOURISH research study)

  • The new website featured in presentation at the International AIDS Conference in 2024

THE RESULT

CASE STUDY 2 OF 3

CLIENT: Harvard | PHACS (Pediatric HIV/AIDS Cohort Study)

deliverables: visual designs, document design, brochure for print

THE BRIEF

  • The HOPE and AMP UP Studies of PHACS need to collect swabs from participants to evaluate the effect ARV’s and medicinal regimens might have on their medical health

THE CHALLENGES

  • People don’t know the complex science behind what a microbiome is

  • The swabs we were requesting can be considered “sensitive” or “invasive” – it is important that participants feel comfortable

THE SOLUTIOn

  • Create a brochure to provide information about the microbiome, for participants and researchers/site coordinators

EXECUTION + DESIGN

  • All clinical sites have access to the digital version on the website

  • Clinicians printed the brochures for on site events

  • Staff confirmed that the brochures clarified the microbiome, influenced engagement

  • Use bright images to excite the users, break up complicated text

  • Create a faded motif so individuals can visualize the microbiome

  • QR code so participants can access PHACS website with further research questions

THE RESULT

CASE STUDY 3 OF 3

CLIENT: Harvard | PHACS (Pediatric HIV/AIDS Cohort Study)

deliverables: SCRIPT, SHORT ANIMATION

  • The HOPE study was requesting individual’s opt in to sharing their address to use geocoding to determine trends about environment and health

  • More participants = more data = stronger evidence of trends

THE BRIEF

THE CHALLENGES

  • Participants were worried sharing their address would put their medical records/status at risk of being disclosed

  • Limited budget and timeline - didn’t have the capacity to have a multiple day shoot with actors

THE SOLUTIOn

  • Create an animation about Geocoding, defining what it is and concerns around unintentional disclosure

EXECUTION + DESIGN

  • A short animation, using diverse images with the opportunity for participants to ask any more questions

  • After viewing the animation, many participants opted into the study - saying the video was a major influence on their decision

  • Site staff said the animation allowed them to better educate participants about their role in the research
